I have been reading a book these passed few weeks called “The Seat of the Soul”, by Gary Zukav. Heard of it? It’s the second time I am reading it, and this time it has had more of an impact on my life. I have highlighted so many paragraphs and phrases that held particular meaning for me, but one chapter really stood out for me, concerning our planet and reverence:
Gary says, “Our species has become arrogant. We behave as though the Earth were ours to do with as we please. We pollute its lands, oceans and atmosphere to satisfy our needs without thinking of the needs of the other life forms that live upon the earth, or of the needs of the Earth. We believe that we are conscious and that the Universe is not. We think and act as though our existence as living forces in the Universe will end with this lifetime and that we are responsible neither to others nor to the Universe”. Zukav goes on to say that, “The cycles of Life need to be approached with reverence. They have been in place for billions of years. They are the reflection of the natural breathing of the soul of Gaia itself, the earth consciousness, as it moves its force fields and guides the cycles of Life. If these are revered, how could we look at something as exquisite as our Earth’s ecology and do one thing that would risk the balance of this system? Reverence is an attitude of honouring Life. Reverence is simply the experience of accepting that all Life is, in and of itself, of value.
“To live with reverence means being willing to say, “That is life, we must not harm it,” and “Those are our fellow humans, we must not destroy them,” and mean it. It means re-examining the way we treat the members of the animal kingdom that serve us so patiently. It means recognizing the rights of the Earth”.
It’s so beautifully written. It makes me really want to take a step back and re-evaluate everything I have done so far to contribute towards sapping the Earth of its energy and resources. I don’t do nearly enough to preserve my planet, to love it and respect it.
Let’s pretend for a moment. If you were told (via the news or a believable source) that in 2 years time, the Earth’s core would shift, and a massive tidal wave would wash over all low laying land, completely wiping out all forms of electricity everywhere, what would you do? How do you think the world would react?
Just imagine, for a moment, that the President of the United States and all the Powers that Be, were really preparing for 2012. But they could now warn the rest of humanity in advance, because there would be chaos everywhere. People would probably sell their property and cash in on all their insurance and policies. So let’s pretend that they’re keeping it a secret. And then suddenly, in December, 2012, the hooha hits the fan. There would be, once again, chaos everywhere. Let’s say that the world wouldn’t come to an end, but if you live near the ocean, you’re pretty screwed. Things would run out. People would steal and murder to survive. Your only chance at survival would be to get up as far inland and as high as possible. But what then? What would you eat? How would you cook it? Where would you get your clean water from? Think about it for a minute. How would you really survive? You would purely have to rely on nature for your survival. To be sheltered. To eat. To drink. To wash. To keep warm. To clean. To medicate. How would you go about achieving this? You could only stock up with a certain amount of shelf life goods. But then what? Things run out and expire.
You would have to look at this whole experience as a new beginning. As a cleansing. A chance to start all over. I encourage everyone reading this, to start by doing something meaningful for your planet today. Not tomorrow, but now. As if you were starting over. To be conscious of every single move you make, and ask yourself, “Is what I am buying, eating, cleaning with, or throwing away going to affect my planet negatively in any way?”
I encourage your comments and suggestions. And I personally look forward to making more of a concerted effort in loving the planet I live on, and the body I live in. I am going to pretend that 2012 is really coming. Guess I should start looking for property somewhere inland and high up!
Here’s to a cleansing!
