Weight gain

Question
Hi I am a 29 year old woman who lives in Johannesburg. I have a 1 year 11 months old baby. I am a business analyst and barely have time for a lot of activities mainly due to work. I have been taking Eltroxin for over 4 weeks now on a dose of 0.05mg. I am 1.63 m tall and weigh 104 kg putting my BMI on class II obesity. I have just invested in a Maxxus V800 vibrating machine. I really want and need to lose weight, however that has been something that is almost impossible to achieve. Please advise which weight loss pill can I take to assist in my weight loss as I feel an adjusted diet and exercise on the machine is not enough, I am still gaining weight. I have been a member of the gym since varsity and never lost weight, instead it stayed on although I was not gaining. However since I left the gym, about 2 years ago I have gained a horrandous amount of weight (+20KG)! I have seen NUVORYN on the web, is it safe, does it really work and can I use it. Along with that will it be beneficial if I were to incorporate the Ferguson Diet and Ozone therapy in my efforts for weight loss. Please help as I am really deperate. I do not know how to keep the weight off anymore and I feel as though my body is fighting me on this one as this has been a life long struggle. Your advise is sincerely appreciated.

Thank you for your question. I appreciate how challenging this issue probably is for you. It''s great to read that you have made some effort towards nutritional modification and activity but these do take time to work. If you have been diligent and have as yet to see results then perhaps the changes you made were either not entirely appropriate or enough. There is also the fact that the excess weight itself will encourage more fat to be stored.

I do not think that there is a one-pill-for-all solution for your weight issue, i.e. stay away from products that promise a cure for all ills in one simple tablet. My advice would be to find a FLT practitioner in your area who understands the complexity of your health issues and ask them to assist you to appropriately modifiy your mealplan, appropriately modify your activity plan and to consider the impact of your imbalanced endocrine system and excess weight on your weight loss goals. Contact www.amipro.co.za to find one near you. FLT practitioners work with sustainable lifestyle modification, not fad dieting. This makes it much healthier for your body and the results are longer lasting.

Many thanks and warm regards

Question
Hi my daughter (15) has been on eltroxin for almost 2 years now. She was told to take it every morning except Wednesday and Saturday.Could she take herbal medication like solal technologies thyroid support formula, instead of eltroxin. She does horse riding(show jumping) for 3 hours a week. We have been on a protein diet for 2 weeks and she really has not lost weight. We have cut out fizzy coldrinks, crisps, sweets, bread and junk food.she would love to loose weight .is it true that if you have been on eltroxin for a long time you become infertile? Please can you give us some advice.

Answer

Dear B

Thank you for your question. I am indeed surprised to read that your daughter was started on Eltroxin at the tender age of 13! What was the indication? If the indication was to assist with weight loss I have to say that that is a very precarious path to follow as the long term side effects of unnecessary Eltroxin are quite dangerous.

Similarly why have you decided to go onto a protein-only diet? As important as protein is to building a healthy functional body, excessive protein intake out of balance with healthy carbohydrates and oils is asking for liver and kidney problems. Weight lost in this manner is never sustainable and when you stop the diet the weight comes back. It is what we call a "yoyo" diet with weight spiraling up and down regularly.

Chronic use of Eltroxin affects your thyroid gland, which in turn affects your hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which in turn impact on your ovaries ability to create a healthy environment in the body within which a baby can be conceived and fostered until birth. So yes Eltroxin does have an impact on fertility.

Before I can offer any further advice I would like you to consider what is the primary issue here? Perhaps an individual appointment would be a more appropriate avenue to discuss you daughter's case further. You are welcome to call 076-299-4662 to make an appointment.

Many thanks and warm regards

Question
I have been on Cilift since June 2010. Since then, I have picked up a whopping 10kg and this is after a healthy eating plan and exercising every day for an hour (mountain biking). I take my dieting and exercising seriously, and I can't understand this. Is it fact that Cilift can effect weight? I am thinking of going off the medication due to this (I am on it for mild panic attacks).

Answer

Hi

While Cilift doesn’t generally induce so much weight gain, some people do experience weight gain and others weight loss. Has anything else been different in the last few months that might have caused the weight gain? If all other things are the same then it is likely to be the Cilift. You would need to weigh up the benefit that you get from it with the drawback of the weight gain.

I suggest that you go back to the Dr who prescribed it and discuss switching to an alternative.

Warm regards

Question
Am am 30 years old, 1.62m tall and weigh 73kg. I am about 10kg's overweight. for the past 2 months i have been eating healthy, 5-6 smaller meals a day and i gym 5-6 times per week. I am still struggling to loose weight. i have been gyming on and off for the past 2 years, without any real results. but it has only been since about 5 months ago that i really started gaining weight, especialy around my stomach and thighs. I have also been experimenting with different kinds of contraceptives. I us to be on Triphisal, then switched to Nordette for 2 months and am on Yasmin now for 4 months. Could that be the reason for my sudden weight gain??? Please help!!!

Answer

Hi

I apologise for the delayed response!

Yes, that could be the reason. Hormonal contraceptives can alter our metabolism resulting in weight gain. Resistant weight especially around the stomach and thighs is often related to thyroid and sex hormone changes. Have you had your thyroid function checked? Have you been quite stressed? Both stress and an underactive thyroid can result in weight gain.

I suggest that you pick one oral contraceptive and stay with it for a while to give your body a chance to stabilise, and visit your Dr to check your thyroid function.

Warm regards

Gabriell
