A Deep Look at Life - by Lara Potgieter

If you're someone that always wants to know more, and you wonder about existence and the why's and how's, then the study of metaphysics is bound to captivate you. A branch of philosophy called metaphysics explores the underlying principles that make up life showing us how to apply these to master our lives.
Aristotle described metaphysics as 'the philosophical study of the science of being and knowing.' This rather broad definition is evidence of the subject's wide scope, which essentially includes the unseen dimensions and mechanics that underpin all existence - the principles on which life is built. The study of metaphysics helps us achieve personal mastery in all four areas of existence: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It can help us to understand how our physical bodies are expressing our internal states; to skillfully navigate our emotions; to develop positive habits and empowered responses; to connect to our inner knowing and personal vision; and to leave the world a better place for future generations. We take a look at four basic pillars of metaphysics: self-awareness, control of the mind, energy perception and intuitive development. SELF-AWARENESS Having an astute self-awareness means we are able to understand the mental, emotional and spiritual factors that have resulted in our current life experience. We can explore our fears, beliefs and karmic patterns from outside ourselves or from a 'witnessing' point of view. If we are truly self-aware, we are also aware of the rules of natural law. The most important of these is that thought manifests matter, and that we are in fact in control of how we respond to our lives. As self-aware beings, we can also come to be aware of the unity of humanity, and generate respect for the various religions of the world as different expressions of human spirituality and devotion. CONTROL OF THE MIND Authentic self-awareness and mastery of natural law can be developed through meditation, affirmation and visualization. All these tools help with the next pillar - control of the mind. Meditation is practised in many different forms, including unstructured, semi-structured, structured, and even action techniques. We are generally drawn to the practices that resonate most strongly with us, and there is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to meditate. ENERGY PERCEPTION The third pillar of metaphysics ' energy perception - is based on the premise that everything is energy and energy is everywhere. Working with energy centres in the body (chakras), colours, auras and energy perception techniques like psychometry and other divination techniques is a way of exploring our connection to the energy that surrounds us. INTUITIVE DEVELOPMENT Last but certainly not least, the intuitive development pillar of metaphysics refers to the training and refining of our spiritual gifts to serve our higher purpose. These gifts can help us perceive higher truths, get in contact with universal oneness and enjoy a truly integrated existence. They can include anything from a strong inner voice and an adept interpretation of subtle messages and symbols to the gifts of clairvoyance, clairsentience and clairaudience. From esoteric concepts like reincarnation, astral projection and guides to the more exoteric topics of relationships, personal development and belief systems, metaphysics offers ideas and tools that can benefit people from all walks of life. Karen Barensch? and Belinda Davidson, founders of the METAVarsity school of metaphysics in Cape Town, explain that 'Great joy and growth accrue to those willing to work ceaselessly to develop their consciousness and apply what they have learnt to assist others.'
