Better Sleep, Better You

Sleep is essential to wellbeing, yet millions of people don't get nearly enough of it. In today's busy society - where processed foods, sugary beverages and highly stressful jobs are the norm ' it's no coincidence that sleep deprivation has become increasingly prevalent. It can increase the risk of certain chronic health problems, and can also affect how well we think, react, work, learn, and get along with others. Numerous factors can contribute to poor sleep, including vitamin and mineral deficiencies. We explore two essential natural supplement solutions for better sleep.
One essential mineral that plays a critical role in the body is magnesium. In fact, every cell and organ needs this mineral to function properly. As well as contributing to bone, brain, heart and muscle function, it can also help you get better quality sleep. In order to fall and stay asleep, the body and brain need to be relaxed. For this to be achieved, the brain will release gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is a neurotransmitter that reduces the activity of nerve cells in the nervous system, essentially allowing the brain to 'switch off'. Without adequate magnesium, the body is unable to effectively activate GABA receptors. Magnesium thus plays an important role in supporting deep, restorative sleep by maintaining healthy levels of GABA. There are many different supplemental forms of magnesium on the market, and choosing the correct one is important. The Wellness Warehouse brand offers a special type called magnesium bisglycinate or glycinate. This type of magnesium is one of the most easily absorbed forms available. Unlike other forms of magnesium, it may not cause as many adverse side effects (such as gastrointestinal distress or loose stools). This product contains the perfect dosage for someone who wants to up their levels of magnesium for natural sleep support. In addition, melatonin is one of the most important hormones to help optimise sleep, as it plays a crucial role in your circadian rhythm or internal clock, which controls the natural sleep and wake cycle. Melatonin is produced by a pea-sized gland in the middle of your brain called the pineal gland. When your circadian rhythms are disrupted, your body produces less melatonin, which reduces your ability to sleep. In order for optimum levels of melatonin to be produced, the body is dependent on a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Serotonin has many important functions in the body, famously known for its role as a 'feel good' hormone. Increased levels of serotonin are associated with feelings of happiness and relaxation. Low serotonin levels, on the other hand, are linked to weakened immune function, depression and insomnia. One of the most effective ways to boost serotonin naturally is to supplement with 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP). 5HTP is extracted from the seeds of an African plant known as Griffonia Simplicifolia, and is a direct precursor to serotonin production. As mentioned earlier, healthy serotonin levels are essential for maintaining healthy melatonin levels - and both serotonin and melatonin are critical to sleep and a well-functioning internal clock. Another fantastic herbal formulation is Good Health Deep Sleep, which contains a high quality plant-derived extract of 5HTP. I have recommended this product to numerous patients, all of whom have reported positive results. This product also includes the herbs passionflower, Californian poppy and Jamaican dogwood to support the nervous system and aid normal sleep patterns. In my opinion, it is one of the most effective herbal supplements for sleep that is currently available on the market. In modern society, pharmaceutical drugs tend to be the first line of therapy when dealing with sleep deprivation. While these drugs are effective, they can also have significant side effects. Magnesium and 5HTP ' on the other hand - are natural, safe and effective treatments, and many people are not yet aware of their amazing benefits.
