Dr Hauschka is one of our favourite skincare ranges. For over 47 years Dr. Hauschka Skin Care has formulated natural products that support the skin's biology for a balanced, vital and radiant skin complexion. They have a unique and holistic approach to health and beauty designed to respect your skin's wisdom. 'People need two kinds of beauty ' inner and outer.'
Elisabeth Sigmund (1914'2013)
On 25 October 2014 Elisabeth Sigmund, the revered and greatly missed co-founder of Dr. Hauschka Skin Care, who passed away last year, would have celebrated her 100th birthday.
Central to the philosophy behind Dr. Hauschka is that your skin inherently knows how to regulate itself. All the preparations are formulated to support the skin to function properly, rather than replace or manipulate the skin's natural tasks.
As Caro Copeland, Chief Executive of Tocara Skin & Body Science says, 'The body absorbs 60% of what you put on your skin so it's vital your skin-care products contain only what's good for the body. Dr. Hauschka is fully certified as 100% natural.' Caro has been the official distributer of Dr. Hauschka in South Africa for ten years.
A core principle of Dr. Hauschka is to insist on only the finest quality medicinal plant extracts and natural ingredients. The ingredients are either organic, biodynamic or wild-harvested. Every ingredient that goes into a Dr. Hauschka preparation has an important job to do.
During the 1920s Dr. Rudolf Hauschka discovered a unique rhythmical extraction method, which captures the life force of the powerful healing plants during extraction and processing without the use of alcohol. Although primarily involved in medicines he considered launching his own skincare range to complement the medicinal preparations.
In the 60's his ideas became a reality when he met Vienna-born, cosmetologist Elizabeth Sigmund. Elisabeth had her own formulations, and began to add Hauschka remedies to her preparations and was amazed at the immediate results she got. Dr. Hauschka had a profound wisdom about the best ways to treat the skin naturally, having been a pioneer and world leader in developing natural remedies and medicines. Their combined acumen led to the launch of the Dr. Hauschka products in 1967.
'When we developed these unconventional skin care products we naturally felt like rebels.'
Elisabeth Sigmund (1914'2013)
Tuning into changes in the skin
Skin is a flexible, strong, yet sensitive organ. The demands made on it are varied and intense. It's the first point of contact between you and the world and needs special care.
At Dr. Hauschka, we refer to 'skin conditions', which are changeable, rather than the static 'skin type'. You need specific care concepts for different days, places, seasons and stages of life.
For example you might use Quince Day Cream if you have normal to dehydrated skin most days of the year, but apply Rose Day Cream on days when your skin is feeling sensitive. Dr. Hauschka has products to suit you, whatever your skin condition or stage of life. The precious product compositions stimulate your skin's natural regeneration.
When you look in the mirror, you can see more than just a familiar face: signals are emitted by your skin, lips and eyes that are subtle indications of your body's response to your environment. Dr. Hauschka's belief is you can sense what would benefit you today and what would help you be at one with yourself and the world.
The classic hero for 47 years...
Rose Day Cream is the centrepiece of the range. It captures the strength and softness of biodynamically grown damask roses to nourish and protect dry and sensitive skin and skin prone to redness and dilated capillaries. Although its formula has been altered slightly over the years, its unique moisturising properties remain unchanged. It's now even richer in roses and has sustaining carnauba wax.
And then there's the treatments:
To experience a Dr. Hauschka Face and Body treatment is to be transformed. Based on our time-proven, signature method of artful touch, each treatment is designed to work with your body's natural rhythms to transform you on the inside and outside.
The same methods and techniques that inform our products, provide the bases of our facial and body treatments. By using a holistic, rhythmic approach, we provide stimuli that support skin renewal and overall wellbeing.
'The top-quality growing methods, the unique method of extraction, and the way the product is applied to the skin ' these are what make the preparations and treatments so powerful and effective,' says Elizabeth King, Account Director for Dr. Hauschka SA. Elizabeth has returned home after 15 years in the UK, where she worked as Dr. Hauschka UK brand principal.
What does Dr. Hauschka mean by 'holistic'?
The simple answer is that we always keep the big picture in mind. For any action we take and every decision we make, Dr. Hauschka takes the time to look at all the ramifications it may have on the skin, health, the community and the planet.
Sustainable partnerships around the world
Where an organic version of a raw material is not yet available Dr. Hauschka initiates organic or biodynamic farming projects. Dr. Hauschka works with local communities around the world to establish fair trade initiatives that provide the highest quality botanical ingredients while helping to promote sustainable agriculture and economic self-reliance.
A few examples of these fair trade initiatives:
First organic mango butter worldwide as a result of a cultivation project in India.
Damask rose essential oil from Afghanistan and, following a seven-year biodynamic cultivation project, the highlands of Ethiopia.
Shea Butter from Bukino Faso.
Ice Plant from South Africa
Celebrities love Dr. Hauschka
Many actors insist on Dr. Hauschka during their film shoots, when the skin is subject to particularly harsh treatment. Three common favourites among both female and male celebs are:
Soothing Cleansing Milk to remove make-up
Rose Day Cream for dry, sensitive skin
Melissa Day Cream for redness and combination skin

From the Cape of Good Hope
In 2009 the Dr. Hauschka Med range was launched, featuring formulations for extremely dry skin, and neurodermitis. The key ingredient, the Ice Plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum), is grown in Wellington, South Africa, by Parceval Ltd Pharmaceuticals, on their beautiful, biodynamic Waterkloof Farm. The farm has been cultivating the Ice Plant for 14 years and now produces around ten tons a year.
The Ice Plant Face Cream is a popular product in the Dr. Hauschka Med range. For this cream, the precious juice of the Ice Plant combines with high-quality poppy seed oil, noticeably reducing dryness and associated itchiness and providing the skin with an invisible, stabilising protective layer.
did you know? The Dr. Hauschka company is held in a foundation trust and can never be bought or sold, this means safeguarding its values and ethos.
