Dear N

Thank you for your question. A chronically swollen tonsil is not something to let slide. The tonsils are glands like any other in the body and form of part of our defense system against the world at large. Usually they flare up when an invader is trying to break through but the body either gets rid of the invading molecule or you develop a systemic immune response. Either way the gland will return to normal size within 1-3 weeks. Eight months is way too long.

There are other conditions that result in prolonged enlarged lymph nodes apart from infection. These are to numerous to discuss in this forum. I would strognyl advise that you make an appointment with a health care practitioner, either myself or someone else, to have the underlying cause of the enlarged lymph node explained.

You can contact me via www.healthnation.co.za for an appointment.

Many thanks and warm regards

Dear K

Thank you for your question. Firstly I think that it is horrendous that you have had six bouts of tonsillitis this year. For an adult to have such a poorly functioning immune system means that there is something seriously wrong. Cutting your tonsils out will simply be shooting the messenger. It won't do anything to change the fact that your body is in a perpetual state of full alert, with all sorts of immune cells flooding your system at the drop of a hat. Your doctor is correct in that you should not have any further antibiotics. In fact s/he should have stopped after the second course and done further investigations such as a swab culture. Celestamine is a steroid that is a pharmaceutical attempt to try and suppress your immune response. But this has far reaching side-effects. I would seriously consider further investigation and appropriate lifestyle modification. There are alternates to rebooting your immune system, helping your body to recover naturally from this immense level of stress it is under. You can contact me at www.healthnation.co.za for an appointment if you would like a tailored program for yourself.

General steps to begin with would be to use an appropriate probiotic, at least twice daily on an empty stomach. I would also begin a high-dose Omega 3 supplement. Your diet needs to be adjusted to cut out all foods that may be contributing to the immune response and you need to begin an activity program that supports your recovery instead of hindering it. I would also request a swab culture of your tonsillar surface, as well as a blood test to ascertain the state of key nutrients in your system.

Please don't hesitate to contact me for further advice.

Many thanks and warm regards

As you know, fatigue, or feeling tired, is a very general condition and does require extensive testing to identify any sinister causes if improvements are not seen timeously with treatment. The sleep apnoea appears to be the main contributory factor for your fatigue but a detailed consultation would be required to confirm this. Not getting enough sleep is terribly detrimental to both your physical and mental health. A detailed case history would look carefully at your entire person, with particular attention to your sleep patterns in order to isolate the problem areas. We would ascertain if there is an element of insomnia, emotional factors such as stress or inability to switch thoughts off at night time, or lack of normal circadian rhythm, We would identify possible dietary and lifestyle corrections, such as stimulant use, alcohol intake, eating too late at night, or obesity. Common causes of sleep apnoea include obesity, high blood pressure and respiratory problems. I’m not sure whether you snore or not but the cause could be as simple as a chronic nasal or sinus infection. It sounds as though you’ve investigated many possible avenues of treatment without success so I would suggest individualised homoeopathic treatment, which will take into account all of the factors pertaining to your case, as well as herbal and supplement treatment if needed. Homoeopathic treatment aims to treat by addressing the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms, to restore your health and normal lifestyle. You can make an appointment to see me at the WellClinic, alternatively I would suggest that you see a specialist that deals with sleep apnoea so that they can give you definitive treatment for your condition. Other forms of treatment do include using positive pressure ventilation whilst sleeping which helps keep your airways open. Surgery may also sometimes be indicated. Kind regards Dr Megan Jones (Homoeopath)

Tinnitus can occur from a variety of causes. Medical professionals estimate that 85% of the causes of ringing in the ears is unknown.

You can use:

1) Tinnitus homeopathic tablets from NATURA, 2 tablets once daily however one should continue treatment for at least 3 months

2) Vertigoheel from HEEL (tablets or drops),

3) Magnesium deficiency is linked to many of the conditions that occur along with tinnitus, and seems to be another nutrient that is needed for proper hearing.

4) A study from Israel found that tinnitus is associated with a vitamin B12 deficiency, and that patients improved with vitamin B12 therapy

We have to re look at some of the causes of sore throats. If it was bacterial, it would have responded well to antibiotics, so in your case it could very well be linked to a viral infection. Viruses do not respond to antibiotics. If your immunity is good your body should be able to make the appropriate antibodies to fight this off. I am not sure why the tonsils have been removed but that is considered a key lymph station in fighting off infection. This is now removed, but the problem is still persisting. Obviously you will have to maximize your immunity. Your immunity must be built up very carefully. A starting point would be to take Heel Lymphomysot to assist building your lymphatic and immune system. A simple home remedy would be to mix a pinch of turmeric and ginger powder in a spoon of honey and have this a few times in a day. This will also help soothe the throat. Should the problem persist further, you may need to make an appointment to see an ENT specialist so that he can examine your throat more closely. Good Day!

Vertigo is a type of dizziness that causes a shift in one’s balance. It produces a false sensation that one’s surroundings

Vertigo has a few causes namely:
Inner ear disorders. A condition known as Benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV) causes inner ear dysfunction, of which its cause is unknown but upper respiratory tract infections or a mild blow to the head may be responsible for this

Cranial nerve no.8 (acoustic nerve) disorders

Motion sickness

Meniere’s Disease – a disorder that comprises of vertigo, hearing loss and tinnitus

Certain central nervous system conditions such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, brain stem tumours and heart attacks

Bacterial & Viral infections affecting the inner ear, such as herpes zoster

Certain drugs can also affect & damage the inner ear like antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs & diuretics

The following remedies have been used to treat vertigo:

Vertigoheel (Heel)

Vasoplex (Enzyme Process) – to improve circulation

Vertigo – Homeopathic (Enzyme Process)

Ginkgo Biloba extract

Ginger – to help with the nausea

Gelsemium & Spigelon (Heel) – for headaches

I would recommend you visit an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist to get to the bottom of your problem. It sounds like your symptoms are coming from your throat and not your lungs. An ENT Specialist would be able to have a close look at your tonsils and vocal chords with an endoscope to see what is the cause of your symptoms. The fact that you are getting recurrent bouts of tonsillitis as an adult would make you a very likely candidate for a tonsillectomy. Kind regards Dr Sean Gomes MD
