Hypercholesterolemia

As I do not know your full medical history and your cholesterol profile, I would not advise changing your medications without the supervision of your usual doctor. Cholesterol can often be lowered through changing lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise as well as the use of natural supplementation. Some patients do see good results with this, which allows them to reduce or even stop their Cholesterol lowering medication. However, other patients do not see results form these modifications and need to continue on their usual medications in order to lower the risk of coronary events. I think you would be able to try Rychol in conjunction with your usual medication and then have your doctor assess how you get on in terms of cholesterol levels. He will then be able to modify your medications if necessary. Best of luck and kind regards. Dr Sean Gomes

The question is, do you have a healthy gut? A colon cleanse is sometimes recommended, but not always necessary.

Also do you suffer from constipation? Within the colon are billions of good bacteria which keep you healthy. Unfortunately as one ages as well as a modern lifestyle, it may lead to an imbalance of the friendly bacteria, & subsequently to poor health. A probiotic here is a good option. This will assist to detoxify the colon & promote regular bowel movements. Furthermore I would recommend an oxygen releasing supplement which supports colon cleansing:ie Magnozone Powder, by Amipro. We stock this at Wellness Warehouse. For further information , please contact Felicia at Natural Dispensary, Kloof Street. Regards Felicia

Thanks for your question and sorry to hear that things have not been going well for you.I have gotten some input from our Nutritional Therapist for your complicated case. From a medical point of view, if it is the indigestion which is the major problem, you may need to have a surgical procedure to prevent further reflux and potential damage to the oesophagus. You will need to discuss this further with your Gastroenterologist who would be able to refer you to an upper GI surgeon. Their is a successfull procedure called a Nissen fundoplication, which is used in cases of persistent acid reflux. Taryn, our Nutritional Therapist has recommended you have a Intestinal Dysbiosis Test, which detects and quantifies the normal and pathological bacteria and fungi in the GIT system, other tests which may help are a food allergy test and a Parasite Serology test. These can all be done as a stool sample test through Synexa Life Sciences (contact Anel Clark, 021 933 9580), each have shown to help detect the cause of the symptoms presented. Once potential pathology is detected then it will make it easier to focus treatment and also to avoid triggers. General suggestions (some of which you are no doubt already doing) would be to loose weight, eat smaller portions and avoid lying down 1-2 hours after eating, do not wear tight fitting clothing, avoid tea/coffee/mints/fizzy drinks/fatty and fried foods/citrus fruits/chocolate and alcohol. It is also wise to check any current medication, as these may also effect you, especially over the counter cold and flu medication, birth control pills, nervous system medication and any hormone therapy medication.

Wishing you well. Kind regards

Dr Sean Gomes and Taryn Roseveare

You mention a high cholesterol (6), but not whether you had a full lipid profile, whereby the low density lipids, high density lipids & triglycerides & thereby your total cardiac risk factor established.

RyChol, is a natural cholesterol lowering formula and is essentially composed of Red Yeast Rice Extract, Vit B12,B6 and Folic Acid. These ingredients should not have an effect on Potassium levels.

The increases in potassium could be co-incidental. I would recommend you have another test done. Some times the way blood is taken and then processed can result in skewed lab results.

You would also be wise to consult your doctor again as there has been an increase in total cholesterol. This could again be related to a number of factors related to the testing. Did you fast correctly?

Also remember that diet is very important as well as taking a good quality Omega 3 Complex, as well as Co Enzyme Q10, which must be taken in conjunction with a Simvastatin. These products have been scientifically proven to reduce the occurrence of cardiac events.

Please feel free to come into the store should you require further assistance and advice.

Kind regards & best wishes.

Unfortunately Colopril , Pharmaxalabs, is not available, nor Bowtrol.

Colopril is essentially Cascara, Ginger, Psyllium seed & a probiotic which is easy to put together. Bowtrol is also an all herbal blend.

Irri-Col by Unique, is based on the same principal, so is Herbal Multi-Cleanse by Goodhealth.

We stock both of these products. We can also offer further advice on colon cleansing & detoxification remedies. Feel free to come in and see us at either of the Natural Medicine Dispensaries at Kloof Street and Cavendish Connect.

It is important to establish whether your test was a total cholesterol or a lipid profile or both. This will assist in determining the best treatment.
RyChol is a general cholesterol lowering formula, which will lower cholesterol & LDL (Low Density Lipids) levels, as well as Homocysteine. All of these have been linied with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Rychol contains red yeast rice extract,Vitamin B12, B6 & Folic Acid, as well as anti-oxidants. No side effects have been documented for this medication.
The dose varies according to your total cholesterol reading. However ,before you substitute a natural supplement for a prescribed allopathic medication, it would be necessary to further assess your blood test results. Please feel free to visit me at our Kloof Street branch for further assessment. Regards Felicia (Natural Medicine Dispensary Consultant and Head Pharmacist, Kloof Street Branch)
