I hope that all is well with your mom.

Typically following surgery, patients are put onto a liquid diet, followed by a light, low residue diet and then discharged home. Once at home patients are able to resume their usual diets. As her IBS was well-controlled prior to surgery, I would suggest that your mom continues to eat as previously tolerated as well taking the probiotics. Sufferers of IBS benefit from a high fibre diet. I would encourage wholegrain cereals, oats, brown rice and pasta, wholemeal bread and plenty of fruit and vegetables. Dairy and wheat should be taken as tolerated. Remember plenty of fluids are important - aim for 2-3 litres per day.

Great to hear that you are taking a probiotic. It used to be recommended to take a proboitic on an empty stomach but more recent research has shown it to be more effective taken with food. I suggest taking it straight after breakfast. Kind regards, Dr Megan Jones

There could be many factors leading to this problem and these need to be properly investigated. Some factors that could be causing or aggravating the problem are poor diet, stress, weakened immune system and medication. You have already begun an anti fungal treatment by using probiotics. Continue with that as they will help to restore the normal balance of good bacteria. Start taking Amipro Digestizyme after meals. It contains a digestive enzymes to help breakdown the foods properly as well as ingredients to deal with food intolerances. I would suggest you take Pranarom Oregano Oil Capsules. This will help eliminate the Candida. A high dose of buffered Vitamin C will also be useful such as Metagenics Ultra Potent-C. Follow a good Candida diet programme. It’s good that you have eliminated sugar as this feeds the yeast. Have a good post eating ritual by mixing together some fennel seeds and some small bits of fresh coconut. Simply munch on them. Fennel aids digestion and will ease the bloating. The coconut is rich in lauric and caprylic acid. These are powerful antifungal agents and will assist in eliminating the recurring problem. Also include a dash of Asoefitida or Hing to your preparations. It will also ease the digestive problems.

From the symptoms you described it seems your problem lies with your primary digestive process ie.The breakdown of foods. Supplementing with digestive enzymes will help in this regard. I recommend Supergest from Enzyme Process or Digestizyme from Amipro. You can include a colon cleanse if wish, for this you can use Natural Detox Bowel Cleanser from Nat Sure or COLON CLEANSE from ESI.

I am glad that you have had relief from your symptoms. There are no negative effects form the long term use of Probiotics and in the case of IBS, probiotic supplementation is recommended. What I would recommend is that you review your symptoms in 6 months time to see whether you are still getting good relief from using the same probiotic. Sometime your intestine and intestinal flora can become used to the same type and amount of probiotic bacteria and a change in the strength or brand may help maintain a normal level of good gut bacteria. Stomach symptoms you describe are often related to IBS, irritable bowel syndrome also called spastic colon. Please read my health guide on IBS.
