Dear T

Thank you for your question. The doctor who prescribed the Acnetane to you should have explained that a dry mouth is one of the more common side effects of the drug. Apart from stopping the drug you cannot stop the dryness, only manage it by ensuring that you keep well hydrated - always have a bottle of water handy and sip frequently. Ensure that you stay away from foods and drinks that dry the mouth out further - i.e. alcohol, sugar, etc.

You do not make it clear what part of your body you are referring to when you ask about cleansing so I'm going to assume you are asking about the oral cavity. You can continue to use toothpaste, floss and mouthwash to keep the oral cavity clean. Some products contain ingredients that are know to cause dryness in sensitive individuals so if you find that this is becoming a problem consider swopping to chemical-free options available at most health shops.

Many thanks and warm regards

Hi Zelda

Many thanks for your question. Congratulations on making the decision to quit smoking!

Zyban is listed not to interfere with the contraceptive pill, so no, you definitely should not fall pregnant. Zyban medication has to be prescripted by a medical doctor, as you know. Your doctor would monitor you while on this medication.

Initial side effects may be a headache and nausea. It is the responsibility of your medical doctor to fully inform you prior to taking Zyban, of any side effects of this medication!

All the best of luck with your brave move to stop smoking.

Warm regards and thanks once again.

Dear H

Thank you for your query. This must be a very difficult time for your boyfriend and I really commend you for standing by him and wanting to help where ever possible.

Your boyfriend does need to register with a general practitioner for this kind of pharmaceutical medication. Depending where you are, I would recommend the Hofmeyr Street Practice in Kloof Street, Cape Town. Doctor Moonda provides this service along with relevant counselling for the medication prescribed. He can be contacted at 2a Hofmeyr Street, Gardens, on telephone number 021-4232425; Fax 021-4232426; emergencies 0836609308; e-mail address : hsptiscali.co.za His approach is holistic. Please also liase with our Natural Medicine Dispensary so that suitable natural products can be recommended to work with his choice of pharmaceutical medicine.

Warm regards

Dear F

Thank you for your question. The use of Aspirin for blood thinning has become quite a controversial subject with many new reports coming out showing no change in risk for vascular disease between people using aspirin and those not!

Alternates to help reduce intravascular inflammation include Vitamin E, Omega 3 and adequate exercise. There is no quick-fix magic pill to minimise cardiovascular risk and it is only a healthy lifestyle, including healthy balanced eating, exercise and stress reduction, that has been shown to provide any sort of sustainable benefit to people with cardiovascular disease.

Many thanks and warm regards

Dear G

Thank you for your question. I am afraid without a full clinical history it is difficult for me to offer an opinion on the cause of your dilemma. I would advise either making an appointment directly with me for a full consultation or returning to your GP to follow-up on the changes your experienced.

Many thanks and warm regards

Hi Mannie

Thank you for your question. Urbanol, also known as Clobazam or Frisium, is usually used for patients in acute states of anxiety, and disabling psychiatric or neurotic distress. It may also be used to manage the withdrawal process from alcohol, or as a form of pre-anaesthetic. It is part of the benzodiazepine family of drugs, related to more well known drugs like diazepam and lorazepam. Urbanol should preferably be avoided during pregnancy, but may be prescribed when the patient and the situation warrants it. It is not without risk to the mother or the baby, in whom it may cause serious respiratory or neurological complications. Dependent on the duration of the pregnancy when treatment is begun, it has not been shown to directly induce spontaneous miscarriages in recommended dosages.

Personally if the situation warrants the use of a drug such as Urbanol I would recommend one of it’s less harmful family members, under the strict supervision of a medical practitioner of course. High levels of anxiety and distress have been know to induce miscarriages, and in those situations the possible outcomes have to be weighed by all parties concerned.

Many thanks and warm regards

This brand is manufactured in the United Kingdom.

Unfortunately, I am unable to locate any products in South Africa.

Alfred Fenning hails from many years ago & I am of the opinion that you could maybe able to purchase online.

All contraceptives both tablets and injections are always either prescribed by a doctor or are under supervision of a Sister. If you received the injection from our clinic then it wouldn’t be a problem to get it again from us and if not you can always make an appointment to see our Sister and she could advise you further.

Dermovate is available in SA . It is available in a cream, ointment and a scalp application. However it is a schedule 4 so therefore a prescription is required.

Kind Regards

We are based in South Africa and unfortunately are not sure which products are available in New Zealand. Probiflora is a Probiotic, which is formulated in Canada. Each capsule contains 9 registered probiotic strains ie varients of Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium as well as FOS fibre (a prebiotic). Perhaps you can sourse a similar product in NZ if you contact one of the local health shops. Hope this helps. Regards Felicia (Senior Pharmacist & Health Consultant, Kloof)

Multivitamins can sometimes have the effect to stimulate the appetite because they enhance you general wellbeing, but they are not specifically designed to do this. I would recommend that you start eating a health focused diet that will bring you the nutrients without the high calorie load, your body is obviously calling for more nutrients so that it can increase the health of all your organs and tissues. regards Dr Chase Webber ND
