Chronic Cough

Dear R

Thank you for your question. I am afraid that without a proper consultation with an examination of your respiratory system I cannot offer you an opinion regarding the probable causes of your symptoms. You are welcome to contact me through www.healthnation.co.za if you wish to make an appointment.

Many thanks and warm regards

Dear N

Thank you for your question. I would strongly suggest that your husband go visit his GP or local clinic. It sounds like he's got a respiratory tract infection, and from the other symptoms I suspect it may be tuberculosis. This is a disease endemic to the Western Cape, and if his immune system was under duress from other factors, such as poor diet, insufficient activity levels, excessive emotional or psychological stress, or other medical illnesses, it may have opened the door to this opportunistic infection.

It's imperative he have a sputum test performed as a simple chest x-ray is insufficient to make a definitive diagnosis. Even if your doctor insists on a trail of antibiotics I would still ask for the sputum test. Things he could do to support his immune system include increasing his Vitamin C intake (in an esterified form), supplementing with Vitamin D3 and perhaps olive leaf extract.

Many thanks and warm regards

Dear B

Thank you for your question. A chronic cough is certainly not something you should sit on. Viral infections usually clear up after 5-7 days and if it takes any longer your GP should most definitely have a look, perhaps even send a swab off for a bacterial culture. You should consider a course of antibiotics accompanied by strong appropriate probiotics, as well as high doses of Vitamin C and loads of fresh green vegetable juice. Cough syrups and nasal sprays simply "sweep the dirt under the carpet" and do nothing to manage the underlying cause of the problem.

Many thanks and warm regards

There
are many different causes of chronic cough including asthma, chronic
bronchitis, post nasal drip, smoking and gastro esophageal reflux,
amongst many others. Last winter’s cold and flu also caused a post
viral cough which lasted several weeks. If the cough is caused by a
bacterial infection, it will improve with antibiotics, however many
chronic coughs do not have a bacterial origin and so do not respond to
antibiotics.

It is
difficult to make a specific diagnosis without asking further questions
and doing a detailed examination. I would suggest that your father
visit a general practitioner, so that he can have a detailed
examination and investigations as required to determine the exact
diagnosis and to start treatment.

If you would like further advice you are welcome to arrange a consultation to see me.

Regards

Dr Gabriell Prinsloo
