In the southern African region, A. annua is one of the most popular and commonly used herbal medicines. It is one of the most popular local herbal medicines, (mHlonyana) used in a variety of medicines and has been for centuries.
It is now grown commercially in many African countries. Also known as Sweet wormwood, A. annua yields artemisinin and the derivatives of this compound are potent antimalarial drugs.
