Smooth Moves

Creaking, stiff and sore joints aren't just reserved for the aged and infirm. Get your joints in youthful shape by taking care of them, and yourself, learn how to prevent arthritis and reduce pain. OUCH! The causes of joint pain are varied, but can be an injury or disease that affects your ligaments, tendons or bursae (sac filled with fluid usually found in areas subjected to friction) surrounding your joints, as well as cartilage, bones and ligaments inside your joints. Joint inflammation, like arthritis, is also a cause of pain.
Some of the major causes of joint pain are:

Gout
The abnormal metabolism of uric acid results in excess of this acid in your tissues and blood. This is either because your body produces too much uric acid, or (more common) your body has problems removing it.  Commonly, gout pain is sudden and is seen in hot, red, swollen joints, most commonly in the big toe. Gout can lead to inflammatory arthritis as the build up of uric acid crystal can damage the joints over time. It’s the most common cause of arthritis in men over 40.

Arthritis
Classified as a rheumatoid disease, there are over 100 types of arthritis. These range from wear and tear of cartilage (like osteoarthritis, which has been linked to obesity – the joints take a lot of strain because of excess weight), to inflammation as a result of an overactive immune system (rheumatoid arthritis). Degenerative arthritis can be caused by an injury which leads to the degeneration of joints.

Lifestyle & Diet
Foods recommended to assist gout  are foods low in purines like rice, millet, corn, cherries, berries, eggs, nuts, cereals (except oats). Also include pineapple, ginger, dhania, chilli & peppers, tumeric  and lemons. It is very important to increase daily servings of raw vegetables, fruits  and their juices. Especially good foods are celery, broccoli, strawberries, cherries, blueberries  and  bananas to help cleanse the body and neutralise uric acid levels.Avoid alcohol, sugars, caffeine and refined  and processed foods.

Repetitive Strain
Doing the same action over and over again can cause repetitive strain injuries and this can negatively affect your joints permanently, leading to osteoarthritis. If you regularly bend your knees or lift heavy objects as part of your job or exercise routine, you may be at risk of causing abnormal wear and tear on your joints. Never ignore signs of pain as this is your body’s way of telling you something’s wrong.

KEEP THEM SAFE

PREVENT JOINT PAIN BY:
  • EXERCISE IS IMPORTANT TO INCREASE MOBILITY, HALT DEGENERATION OF JOINTS & TO ALLEVIATE PAIN & INFLAMMATION. DON'T OVERDO IT THOUGH.STRENGTHEN YOUR JOINTS SO THEY CAN HOLD UP YOUR FRAME. CROSS AND STRENGTH TRAINING WILL BUILD GOOD JOINT STRENGTH.
  •
  • DIET - KEEP IT SIMPLE AND EAT AS FEW PROCESSED FOOD PRODUCTS AS POSSIBLE, KEEP YOUR WEIGHT DOWN AND FEED YOUR JOINTS WITH HEALTH-GIVING NUTRIENTS. SUPPLEMENT WITH IMPORTANT JOINT BOOSTING NUTRIENTS LIKE VITAMINS C AND D, BORON, MSM (A NATURAL FORM OF SULPHATE) AND GLUCOSAMINE.
  •
  • HYDRATE - YOUR BODY IS 70% WATER, SO IT MAKES SENSE TO KEEP IT WELL OILED WITH ADEQUATE HYDRATION. MAKE SURE THE WATER YOU DRINK IS GOOD QUALITY AND DON’T JUST FILL YOUR QUOTA WITH LIQUID (COLD DRINKS, COFFEE AND TEA).

REDUCE PAIN
Curcumin, found in turmeric is wonderfully anti-inflammatory.

Ginger is similarly anti-inflammatory, but research has found its actions are slightly different to turmeric, and in fact, taken together, they work even more effectively.

Buchu (indigenous to South Africa) is a natural alternative to anti-inflammatories with active biological properties and an excellent safety profile.

Boswellia (or Indian Frankincense) is a fantastic pain reliever, and has been shown to work effectively in just seven days, which is unusually fast for a natural remedy. Boswellia affects inflammatory responses in your body, inhibiting the breakdown of cartilage.

Bromelian is an enzyme found in pineapples and has been shown to reduce pain as effectively as over-the-counter pain killers.

Chrondroitin is a naturally occurring molecule that’s found in cartilage and helps to reduce the thinning of cartilage that happens through wear and tear.

Glucosamine reduces cartilage breakdown and is most often recommended in combination with chrondroitin.

Evening primrose oilis also an anti-inflammatory and contains healthy omega-6 fatty acids.

Omega-3sare absolutely essential for myriad health complaints, including reduction in inflammation and pain, and morning stiffness.
