Sustainability – it’s Not Just What’s Inside

A significant part of the Wellness Green Journey is lessening the environmental impact of our own brand packaging.

We’re using the packaging design update project currently underway across all categories as an opportunity to do just this. As South Africa’s leading natural health retailer, it is our responsibility to do our bit to help minimise waste, design products and packaging with sustainability in mind, and encourage our customers to reuse and recycle insofar as possible.

Our primary goal is to strike a balance between minimising food and packaging waste while upholding food safety, clear labelling, and product quality.

We have introduced recycling logos on our packaging, making this information clearer in the hopes of encouraging more environmental stewardship amongst our customers. We all need to play our part in increasing the amount of waste that is recycled, decreasing contamination in recycling streams, and investing into South Africa’s recycling infrastructure.

What’s important to remember is that logos mean nothing if the recyclable packaging is thrown away with general waste or contaminated with food. This is where we need you to play your part in separating and cleaning packaging for recycling.

We pledge to not mislead you into thinking that our products are environmentally sound or have a greater positive environmental impact than they actually do (this is called ‘greenwashing’, and it couldn’t be further from our philosophy and values). We would rather be transparent about our sustainability journey. Changes take time, and we don’t want to dump any packaging, so are phasing in the new developments instead.

We also offer bulk pantry staples to reduce the units of packaging in your basket; bulk eco home cleaning products in refillable recyclable tubs; plastic-free personal care products; and supplements in reusable glass.

Look out for these upcoming developments with sustainability in mind:

  • Our bulk pantry staples will soon all be in recyclable bags.
  • Our pantry staples and superfood powders in doy pouches are moving to bags in a box or recyclable pouches.
  • Our nut and seed products are moving from labelled to printed pouches.
  • Our plant-based milks have shrink sleeves instead of labels (for cleaner separation from the bottle).

We encourage our customers to shop with the environment in mind, and are here to help you make better decisions about what you leave behind – one basket at a time.

“Wellness Warehouse strives to help you live life well but because we are retailers and not medical practitioners we cannot offer medical advice. Please always consult your medical practitioner before taking any supplements, complementary medicines or have any health concerns and ensure that you always read labels, warnings and directions carefully, prior to consumption.”
