The Healing Power of Scent

The first records of the use of essential oils originate from Greece and Rome in 4500 CB, where they were traded extensively with various regions of the Orient. Ancient India, Persia and Egypt soon joined the trade market with their own oils. Although no one knows for certain, it is widely assumed that these products were the extracts of flowers, roots, and leaves in fatty oils.

Pure, natural oils played an important role in Egyptian culture and ceremonies, as they were used either as a means to purify the air or as sacrifices to the gods. The scented essences were used for baths, ambient perfumes and massage oils, or as medicine.

Today, more and more people are making use of essential oils as part of a holistic mind and body wellness regimen.

The body’s limbic system governs our emotions, facilitates memory storage and retrieval, establishes emotional states, and links the conscious, intellectual functions of the cerebral cortex with the unconscious, autonomic functions of the brain stem.

The quickest route to our limbic systems is through the nose, which is why scent has the ability to trigger strong memories and emotions, and can immediately take us back to specific moments in time. A scent can either bring up fond memories that make us feel good, or make us feel anxious or unsettled about a traumatic event from the past. All these experiences are housed in the limbic system. The good news is that we don’t need to hold onto the negative experiences, and can work to release them through the use of essential oils.

Our bodies are constantly talking to us, telling us exactly what they need. When we crave certain foods, we could be lacking in certain vitamins and minerals. The same applies to scent - if you’re drawn to a certain fragrance, such as jasmine, you could be in need of a pick-me-up (jasmine is a popular natural mood elevator) or be struggling with your sleep. Or if you’re drawn to rose, for example, you could be seeking greater confidence and connection - the traditional symbolic association with this fragrance.

Working with the scents that resonate with you is a safe and enjoyable way to aid in addressing what needs to be unblocked or healed in your mind, body and life at any given moment.

Remember that it’s always best to use organic and environmentally-conscious ingredients, as whatever we put in or on our bodies will affect us. With such an abundance of beautiful essential oils in our country, it’s also important to support and buy from our local communities.
