The Wellness Guide to Eco Babies

One of the best ways to lay a foundation for your children's lasting health is to limit their exposure to chemicals in their environment and to go green, natural, and organic wherever possible.

Cut down on chemicals

Did you know that the average baby goes through 8,000 disposable nappies? These nappies are usually whitened using chlorine bleach, which can cause rashes and eczema. It's been found that exposure to some chemicals can affect children's development, especially those found in products that they come into direct contact with, like nappies. Because they tend to put things in their mouths, and because their brains are still growing and developing, chemicals can be more harmful to them than to adults.

Label lookout

From baby food to bamboo nappies and dummies to toys, there are plenty of earth- and child-friendly alternatives to products made from plastics and other materials that might be harmful to young people and the planet. It's just a matter of knowing what to look out for. Rather than trying to memorise lists of ingredients to avoid (this is a difficult, if not impossible, task), hold onto this checklist of words and phrases to look out for on labels. If you see a few of the below ' the more the better ' on a label or packaging, the product is likely to be a safer option for your young family.

Toys:

  • BPA free
  • Printed with vegetable inks (packaging)
  • Does not contain lead
  • PVC free
  • Pthalate free

Skincare products and nappies:

  • All natural
  • Organic
  • Planet-friendly
  • Fragrance free
  • Bamboo

Bottles and dummies:

  • BPA free
  • PVC free
  • Pthalate free

Note: Remember that packaging is very important, too. Certain packaging materials and inks can be a source of toxins, so when possible choose packaging made from natural, recycleable materials.
