A Celebration of Family, Community & Connection with Nature

The annual Greenpop Reforest Fest has emerged as a unique, family-friendly festival that’s as much about planting trees and restoration as it is about cultivating connections between families, friends, and communities.

“It’s first and foremost a celebration,” shares Lauren Teasdale, Co-Founder & Managing Director of Greenpop. “It’s a chance for families to get out and do something purposeful together, which really can build special bonds within families and groups of friends.”

Now in its 14th year, Reforest Fest has always delivered experiences that blend nature, art, music, family, and community. The festival invites families to come together in an immersive, outdoor setting where everyone participates equally. Unlike a typical outing, parents and children alike get their hands dirty, working side by side to create something that will endure for generations.

“When you’re all together - mom, dad, children, and friends all planting trees - it becomes a shared mission,” continues Teasdale. “It’s a bit tiring, it’s hard work, and then you’re rewarded with delicious snacks at the end. It’s all very bonding.”

The festival's roots reflect Greenpop’s commitment to restoration. Teasdale recalls Greenpop’s founding in 2010, which began as a one-month campaign among friends with a goal to plant 1 000 trees in Cape Town’s local schools: “We started with just a campaign,” she explains. “No formal registration, no planting experience - we just borrowed trucks, got tools, and set a goal.” Their passion quickly inspired others, and now this festival has grown from a small gathering into a broader movement.

For Teasdale, Reforest Fest’s impact on families is especially meaningful. From the beginning, she brought her children along to participate in reforestation efforts, creating a personal tradition. “One day, as adults, they’ll be able to sit under the shade of that tree - that’s so symbolic,” she reflects.

Each tree planted becomes a legacy, and families often return each year, contributing to a living timeline of their efforts. This has allowed Reforest Fest to truly enhance environmental action; by building a vibrant community that has continued to unite in their passion to care for the future of our planet. Over the years, the festival has connected people from all walks of life, creating bonds that simply get stronger with each year and each tree.

“I’ve met so many friends through Reforest Fest,” shares Teasdale. “People have met lifelong friends, and some have even met their future partners. It shows that, when like-minded people gather, meaningful connections are made.”

Many young attendees have even grown up with Reforest Fest, returning as teenagers and young adults. Teasdale shares the story of one attendee who first came as a young child and now returns as one of the festival’s medics: “Last year, our medic had come to Reforest Fest about 10 years ago as a little girl,” Lauren shared. “Now she’s a medical student and part of our team.”

In today’s digital world especially, Reforest Fest offers families and communities a rare opportunity to come together, free from the distractions of screens, online meetings, and social media. For Teasdale, the festival represents an opportunity for everyone to get away from their devices. “Not only is there not much signal, but the focus is not on entertainment; it’s on getting involved,” she explains.

Set amidst the scenic beauty of the Bodhi Khaya Nature Retreat in the Overberg Region, Reforest Fest 2025, taking place from 18 - 21 April, promises to be a celebration of meaningful connection - a blend of environmental impact and community spirit that leaves an enduring legacy in both the landscape and the hearts of its attendees. In Teasdale’s words, “It’s about doing something that will last longer than you.”
